It’s always fun to marvel at the power of the director, and yet, lately, it’s also seemingly fleeting to take back in the power of the producer, in which sometimes, more often than not, it’s not always a two-for-two for Director & Picture. Groups that were “mixed bags” – especially where there was not always even a nominated director that won Picture – included Driving Miss Daisy vs. Born on the Fourth of July, Crash vs. Brokeback Mountain, Argo vs. Life of Pi, 12 Years a Slave vs. Gravity, Spotlight vs. The Revenant, Moonlight vs. La La Land, and so forth…
A lot more of those stated occurrences were recent! This either suggests we have a lot more good films to choose from, or we have toned down our level of quality. That aside, let’s hope the Academy can stay sharp as tack with emphasizing raw talent and promoting future hopes and dreams out of Hollywood.
